HARK ALS comedy fundraiser supports Newtown’s Laurena McCarthy

HARK ALS, plus friends and family of Newtown’s Laurena McCarthy, have announce an evening of comedy to celebrate and support her as she faces advanced stage Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The event will be held on Saturday, June 15, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at the Palace Theatre, 165 Main St., in Danbury. The event is open to the community.

Tickets, at $40 in advance and $45 at the door, are available here. Additional donations of cash or raffle prizes from individuals and local businesses will be gratefully accepted. McCarthy was a Danbury elementary school teacher for over 20 years. During summer breaks, she founded and ran multiple camps, including a farm camp for underprivileged inner-city children and a science camp in New Milford. Laurena lives in Newtown with her husband and their 12- and 23-year-old sons. She was diagnosed with ALS in 2017.

The evening will feature a short film, followed by three comedians: Dave Reilly, Comedian and Master Improv, who has appeared on national and cable TV; AJ Man from the Chaz and AJ morning show on WPLR, and hosted by Art DB. Light fare, cash bar, silent auctions and raffles prizes will be offered throughout the evening. The proceeds from the evening will go towards costly ALS-related expenses for the McCarthy family, including handicap-accessible home renovations and medical equipment.
