Flames 7, Islanders 4
CLAGARY, Alberta (AP) _ Brett Hull scored twice and assisted on two other goals as the Calgary Flames downed the New York Islanders 7-4 Friday night.
Tim Hunter and Jim Peplinski scored first-period goals for Calgary after Pat LaFontaine gave the Islanders the lead less than a minute into the game.
Al MacInnis, Hull and Joel Otto scored in the second period as Calgary took a 5-2 lead. Hull and Hakan Loob rounded out the scoring for the Flames, who remained first overall in league with 56 points and lead the Smythe Division by three points over Edmonton.
Steve Konroyd, Gerald Diduck, Mikko Makela also scored for New York, which fell to third in the Patrick Division with 44 points, one behind Philadelphia and Washington.
″I’vead with 42 seconds remaining in the period after knocking down Bob Bassen’s clearing pass at the New York blue line. Peplinski then skated into the slot and fired a hard wrist shot that beat Smith on the stick side.
MacInnis’ 14th of the year at 4:10 of the second period made it 3-1. He took a drop pass from Steve Bozek on a 2-on-1 and blasted a slapshot from point-blank range through Smith’s legs.
MacInnis’ goal was his 300th career point.
Hull’s 16th of the season came on a power plt the Flames ahead 5-2 at 17:01 with his fifth of the season, with LaFontaine sitting out a double minor for high-sticking.
Calgary Coach Terry Crisp was pleased with his team’s performance.
″The guys played well. All four lines we put out there played well and did their job,″ Crisp said.
