South Umpqua falls to Warrenton in Spelgatti Invitational

SUTHERLIN — South Umpqua opened its girls basketball season Thursday afternoon with a 48-35 loss to Warrenton in the Bill Spelgatti Invitational at Sutherlin High School.

Fernanda Alvarez led the Warriors with 14 points and Claire Bussert added 13. Warrenton led 32-23 at halftime.

Shalyn Gray scored 14 points and Kyla Pires had 12 for the Lancers.

“I was really happy with how we played defensively,” said S.U. first-year coach Dusty Pires. “They pressed us the entire game and we had too many turnovers in the second quarter.”

South Umpqua will continue tournament play against Lakeview at 3:45 p.m. Friday.
