TOOWOOMBA, Australia (AP) _ A pit bull mauled a 79-year-old woman to death Wednesday night, biting her more than 10 times on her face, neck, arms and legs, police said.

The dead woman, whose name was not released, was checking the home of a vacationing friend when the American pit bull terrier jumped a fence and pounced.

Police Detective Inspector Noel Ragh said a female neighbor, whose son owned the dog, initially couldn't drag the animal from the woman's body. The dog turned on her when she tried to beat it away.

Officials in Toowoomba, 60 miles west of Brisbane, destroyed the dog.
