Medicaid expansion supporters in Virginia have new hope

March 9, 2018

YORKTOWN, Va. (AP) — Virginia supporters of Medicaid expansion have new hope that the state will approve the program this year.

Republicans have long blocked expansion in Virginia, but its prospects are now much brighter after several GOP legislators recently changed their mind.

The momentum shift is due in part to President Donald Trump’s embrace of work requirements for low-income people on Medicaid. And an anti-Trump backlash last year helped Democrats gain seats at the General Assembly and give the issue new life.

But many Republicans still oppose expansion and the disagreement is threatening a possible state government shutdown as the House and Senate battle over the issue. Lawmakers are set to leave the capital Saturday without passing a state budget because they can’t agree on Medicaid expansion.
