Wisconsin 4, New Hampshire 2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Jason Francisco and Dan Plante scored 2:14 apart in the second period as Wisconsin beat New Hampshire 4-2 on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Eastern Regional.
Wisconsin meets second-seeded St. Lawrence and Michigan State, a 4-2 winner over Boston University earlier Thursday, takes on top-ranked Maine on Saturday night with the winners going on to the NCAA Final Four in Albany, N.Y.
Francisco took Jason Zent’s pass and put the puck into the open side of the net at 9:00 of the middle period to break a 1-1 tie and give Wisconsin a lead it never relinquished.
Plante converted Blaine Moore’s pass at 11:14 for a 3-1 lead.
Jason Dexter got the Wildcats (25-13-2) within 3-2 at 17:58 when Greg Klym sent him in alone to beat Wisconsin goalie Duane Derksen.
Wisconsin’s Doug MacDonald rounded out the scoring by hitting the empty net with 10 seconds left in the game.
Scott Morrow gave New Hampshire (22-12-2) its only lead of the game when he scored at 6:09 of the first period while the Wildcats were skating with a two- man advantage.
Mike Strobel tied the game at 8:47, beating goalie Jeff Levy off a pass from Brian Rafalski at 8:47.
Derksen had 21 saves for Wisconsin while Levy made 21 for the Wildcats.
