Mexican official: no evidence of organ trafficking

March 26, 2014

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s top anti-kidnapping official says there is no evidence yet to support a claim made by a criminal suspect that he snatched children to extract their organs.

Renato Sales was asked about the issue Wednesday, after last week’s arrest of a drug cartel suspect in western Mexico.

Suspect Manuel Plancarte Gaspar had reportedly told police that his kidnapping gang had harvested the organs, thought it was unclear if they were destined for purported transplants.

An official in the western state of Michoacan said there had been reports that human organs were used in initiation ritual by the state’s Knights Templar drug cartel.

But Sales said there was no evidence that any kidnapping gang had harvested organs.
