More Medical Units Called Up
WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Pentagon says the Army had ordered to active duty 3,609 reserve members and the Marine Corps had summoned 802 as part of the Persian Gulf deployment.
The call up announced Tuesday raises the total of reserve personnel activated as part of Operation Desert Shield to 151,711. All have been activated in support of the operation but not all have been sent to the Persian Gulf, said Maj. Doug Hart, a Pentagon spokesman.
The Army call-up involves 18 medical units. Some recent reports from the Persian Gulf have quoted doctors there as complaining about outdated equipment in their units, and have raised questions about the ability of medical units to handle casualties if fighting breaks out.
The Army call-up increases the number of Army reserves and National Guard members activated for the crisis to 108,531. The Marine Corps call-up raises the total for that service to 18,957.
