Cartwright Should Debate More

September 16, 2018

Editor: A nation without its borders defended soon ceases to exist. The Constitution vests in Congress the power to regulate immigration (to “establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization…throughout the United States;”) and to “provide for the common Defence.” These powers are not given to the cities or the states. The officials running sanctuary cities are violating their oath to uphold and defend The Constitution. I have seen the national attention that the immigration issue and sanctuary cities have brought to Hazleton and the importance of these issues to the residents of the area and to America. I have been closely watching the Congressional race for the 8th District between Republican John Chrin and Democrat Matthew Cartwright. Chrin opposes sanctuary cities in a recent TV ad. Cartwright has voted a number of times to support sanctuary cities. Chrin wants to debate Cartwright five times — once in each county in the district, but Cartwright has only agreed to one debate sponsored by WVIA-TV on Oct. 29 — only a week before the general election. Is Cartwright dodging these additional debates because he knows he has some explaining to do as to his prior support of amnesty and sanctuary cities? Does he support the return of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House? What else is he hiding? Only a number of free and open debates at intervals between now and Nov. 6 will inform the voters of the 8th Congressional District as to how Chrin and Cartwright stand on these and other important issues. I hope Cartwright has a change of heart and agrees to these debates. We need to elect a congressman who supports the Constitution, the American people, and our values. If not, America, the gleaming beacon of freedom in the world, will fade from sight. Frank Polidora, MD DRUMS
