BARSTOW, Calif. (AP) _ A barrage of bullets between a robber and an off-duty police officer at a McDonald’s restaurant left the suspect and a 9-year-old girl dead.
``I heard screaming and hollering and going on and people running all over the place, trying to get hold of their kids,″ customer Art Howell said.
The masked gunman slipped through an employees entrance Monday afternoon and handed a note to the manager, who told workers they were being robbed, said Lt. Jim Lindley.
The off-duty officer eating in the restaurant confronted the gunman, then opened fire when the suspect did the same, Lindley said. The officer shot the gunman seven times, but police said a bullet from the gunman’s weapon struck the girl.
The officer was not wounded.
The girl died at the restaurant, located 120 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert; the gunman died later at a hospital.
No identities were released. Lindley said the gunman was 25 years old and had a lengthy criminal record.
There have been other shootings at McDonald’s restaurants in California.
On June 8, a man involved in a custody arrangement with a woman is accused of shooting her as the children stood nearby outside a McDonald’s in Rancho Cucamonga.
In December, a teen-ager was killed and two people injured when a former employee went on a shooting rampage at a McDonald’s in Vallejo.
By far the deadliest shooting at a McDonald’s came on a hot, sunny, afternoon in July 1984 when a 41-year-old unemployed man named James Oliver Huberty shot and killed 21 adults and children in San Ysidro before he was killed by police.
