LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) _ Two men convicted of murder and robbery in a 1998 restaurant holdup were sentenced to life in prison for killing a chef because the man couldn’t open the restaurant’s safe.
Jerrell Jones, 24, and Roderick Lipsey, 26, were found guilty in March of murder, robbery, attempted robbery and assault with a handgun. Jones also was convicted of raping a female restaurant customer.
Chef Galdino Venegas died six days after his throat was slashed in the robbery at a Harbor City restaurant. Other customers and workers were beaten during the robbery.
Prosecutors had sought the death penalty for both men, but the judge on Wednesday followed a jury’s recommendation of life sentences.
A third man involved in the robbery was sentenced to life in prison without parole last month.
