LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) _ T.J. Rubley’s two touchdown passes helped Tulsa build a 17-point halftime lead, and the Golden Hurricane coasted to a 34-20 victory Saturday night over winless Southwestern Louisiana.

Tulsa improved to 4-2 with its first victory over Southwestern in the past five meetings. Southwestern’s seventh consecutive loss dropped the Cajuns to 0-7.

Tulsa took a 17-0 lead in the first period on a 26-yard field goal by Eric Lange, a 5-yard touchdown pass from Rubley to Bill Buehner and a 1-yard touchdown run by Mark Matheson less than two minutes later.

Another 5-yard touchdown pass from Rubley, this to Fallon Wacasey, gave Tulsa a 24-7 lead at the half. It was expanded to 34-14 when Mario Fair scored from a yard out with 11:05 remaining.

Rubley was 11 for 20 for 195 yards with one interception. Chris Hughley had 103 yards on 26 carries to key Tulsa’s running game.

The loss dimmed the debut of freshman quarterback Reggie Hayes, who threw two touchdown passes for Southwestern in the second half and was the Cajuns’ leading rusher with 92 yards on 15 carries.

Reginald Francois’ 11-yard run gave Southwestern its first touchdown with 8:05 left in the first half. In the second half, Hayes teamed with Greg Laxey on a 36-yard touchdown play and with Wayde Butler from 11 yards out for another score with 6:35 left.
