Carolyn Blackmore: Government needs to take its healthcare responsibility seriously
Editor: Bob Lynne’s May 14 letter is, sadly too true. Social Security and Medicare are approaching insolvency. Congress and the administration could, at any time, change how government funds these programs to ensure long-term solvency, but does not. Healthcare and drug costs are frequent topics of discussion within government but are never really adequately addressed.
Those representing us are not addressing these issues for a number of reasons.
There are ideological differences of opinion on what role the government should play.
The influence of special interests on legislation, personal self-interest and political agendas add to the problem.
