River Plate downs Tigre to retain Argentine lead
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Rodrigo Mora scored a goal in each half to secure River Plate a 2-0 victory against Tigre on Sunday and the reigning champions’ fifth consecutive win in Argentina’s first division.
River remains top of the league and unbeaten after six rounds of matches.
River’s Buenos Aires rival Boca Juniors beat Olimpo 1-0 also on Sunday, while Rosario Central drew 1-1 with San Lorenzo, Godoy Cruz drew 1-1 with Defensa y Justicia, and Lanus beat Racing Club 3-1.
Mora scored with his left foot from inside the penalty area after fellow Uruguayan Carlos Sanchez chested the ball toward him in the 34th minute. He added another with his right three minutes into the second half.
Emmanuel Gigliotti headed in the winner for Boca in the 78th. Olimpo was down to ten players after Colombian Miguel Borja was sent off for a head-butt in the 13th. Olimpo’s Juan Sills was also shown a red card in the 89th.
Rosario Central’s goal came via a Lucas Acevedo header in the 30th, but Juan Cavallaro equalized two minutes from half time.
On Saturday, Atletico Rafaela defeated Gimnasia la Plata 2-0, second placed Velez Sarsfield drew 0-0 with Newell’s Old Boys, Estudiantes beat Belgrano 3-1 and Independiente secured a 1-0 victory against Banfield.
The final game of the sixth round between Quilmes and Godoy Cruz takes place on Monday.
