NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut State Police and Hamden authorities are declining to say whether a police chase was underway at the time of a fatal accident in New Haven.

Officials say a stolen car crashed into a tree at about 1 a.m. Friday, killing the passenger and seriously injuring the driver.

State police said in a news release that Hamden police chased the car at some point before the crash. Troopers referred questions about the chase to Hamden police.

Hamden Police Chief Thomas Wydra declined to answer questions about the chase, citing the state police investigation and his department's internal affairs probe.

State police say 24-year-old Jarelle Gibbs, of New Haven, was killed and the driver, 22-year-old Brandon Shealy, of West Haven, was seriously injured.
