Feds to update NW Indiana residents on lead, arsenic cleanup

April 2, 2018

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) — Residents who live near a federal Superfund site in northwestern Indiana will get an update this week on the next phase of the cleanup of the industrial site’s lead and arsenic contamination.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans a Saturday update on the cleanup work at the USS Lead Superfund site.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that officials from other federal agencies will join the city of East Chicago and its housing authority at the event.

Cleanup work is ongoing in two neighborhoods within the Superfund site, but not at the West Calumet Housing Complex. That housing was built in the 1970s in the footprint of a former lead smelter.

The demolition of that now-shuttered housing has been delayed to give contractors time to test air-monitoring equipment.
