At Least 1 Dead in School Shooting
JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) _ Two youths wearing camouflage opened fire on middle school students Tuesday as they assembled outside during a fire alarm. At least one person was killed and others were injured.
Two suspects were in custody, said Wayne Jordan of the state police. Television station KAIT reported they were ages 11 and 13.
Eight to 13 people, mostly students at Westside Middle School, were injured, said Connie Tolbert, secretary to school superintendent Grover Cooper. The wounded were apparently all females, though it did not appear that only females were targeted, she said.
Other reports put the number of injured at up to 16.
``Someone pulled the fire alarm inside and they went outside, and two people in camouflage clothing started shooting,″ Ms. Tolbert said.
The school has about 250 students in grades 6 and 7.
Jonesboro is a city of 46,000 about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock.
