January 2, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man has died in a New Year’s Day shooting in the largest city in the state.

Birmingham police told news outlets that 57-year-old Earl Lee Evans Jr. was found early Tuesday morning in the yard of a house next to the one he shared with his mother.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Evans dead at the scene.

Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. said investigators were unable to determine the cause of death initially. Williams said an autopsy determine that the victim had been shot.

Shots were fired across the city Monday night and early Tuesday to celebrate the new year.

No arrests have been made.

Evans is the first homicide victim of 2019. Birmingham had 107 homicides last year, including eight that were ruled justifiable.
