Rockies 5, Brewers 4
CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) _ Roberto Mejia hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the seventh inning and the game-winning RBI double in the ninth, as the Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 Monday.
The Rockies, snapping the Brewers’ nine-game winning streak, had only one previous homer all spring, but they hit two off Milwaukee left-hander Graeme Lloyd in the seventh.
Troy Ricker led off the inning with a homer over the left-field wall. With one out, Mejia hit his two-run shot to tie it, 4-4. Mejia, obtained from Los Angeles in the expansion draft, added his decisive double off Carlos Maldonado.
The Brewers scored three times in the third. Dickie Thon singled in one run and Matt Mieske doubled in two.
Cal Eldred started for the Brewers and went four innings, allowing five hits and one run. Colorado starter Mark Knudson, a former Brewer, was tagged for six hits and four runs (two earned) in 2 2-3 innings. Notes:. The Brewers announced Monday that veteran infielder Bill Doran has a labrum tear in his right shoulder and will require arthroscopic surgery. That procedure is scheduled Wednesday in Cincinnati. Doran, purchased from Cincinnati during the off-season to fill a utility role, is expected to be out of action from four to six weeks. ″There’s no damage to the tendons or rotator cuff - that’s the good news,″ said manager Phil Garner. ″I’m glad we found it now rather than waiting until the end of spring training.″ ... The Brewers reassigned four players to their minor league camp: pitchers Francisco Gamez, Marshall Boze and Rafael Novoa and catcher Mike Stefanski.
