March 9, 2019

A man accused of attempting to steal basket loads of electronics from a Target after the store closed and then running from an officer who was arresting him in January received two new charges Friday.

Jacob Anthony Ramirez, 27, is charged with escape and criminal mischief between $2,500 and $30,000. He was already in jail for burglary of a building with intent to commit theft. His bail totals $31,000.

According to his arrest warrant affidavit, Ramirez hid inside a Target store on Jan. 12 and waited until all the employees left the store for the night.

The affidavit did not state which Target Ramirez was inside.

He emerged sometime after midnight, grabbed a shovel and began smashing display cases to get to the electronic merchandise inside, San Antonio Police investigators said.

Ramirez had filled two shopping carts and was moving them out one by one when police arrived, the affidavit said.

A struggle ensued as Ramirez resisted arrest until three officers managed to get him into handcuffs, authorities said.

As police were searching Ramirez, he allegedly told the officer to look in his pocket. Ramirez, who was still in handcuffs, ran as the officer bent over, police said.

He led officers on a chase for two city blocks until they caught up to him, according to the affidavit.
