Car Stolen, Boy Taken on High-Speed Ride

December 26, 1992

SALEM, Ore. (AP) _ An escapee from a mental hospital stole a car with a 4-year-old boy inside and drove it along a highway at speeds of 100 mph before surrendering, authorities said.

The boy, Raymond Rebuth of Garibaldi, wasn’t hurt and appeared cheerful and calm after the ride Thursday, said Sgt. Gary Chichester of the Oregon State Police.

Authorities said Glen Ray Martin, 29, took the car from the boy’s father Thursday in the visitors’ parking lot of the Dammasch State Hospital in Wilsonville. Martin had been committed there Nov. 19, hospital officials said.

Shortly after Martin left the hospital parking lot, Chichester said, police dispatchers began receiving calls from motorists with cellular phones about a car traveling 100 mph on Interstate 5.

A patrolman arrested Martin without incident about 20 minutes later, after he pulled off the highway and into another parking lot, police said.

Officer Loren Weilacher said Martin was charged with kidnapping, car theft and reckless driving. He remained jailed Friday in lieu of $60,000 bail.
