TORONTO (AP) _ Jose Theodore made 21 saves and the Montreal Canadiens scored three times in the second period to spoil the Toronto Maple Leafs' season opener with a 4-0 rout on Saturday night.

The Maple Leafs, losers in the first round of the playoffs last season, were booed heartily as they left the ice.

Mike Ribeiro, Richard Zednik and Sheldon Souray scored in the second for the Canadiens, who won at the Air Canada Centre for just the second time in 12 games.

Theodore, who allowed five goals in Thursday's season-opening loss to Ottawa, made several impressive saves for his 18th career shutout.

His kick save on Alexander Mogilny's partial break away in the second kept the game scoreless.

Montreal took a 1-0 lead at 6:54 of the second after Markov's slap shot deflected off Toronto forward Darcy Tucker's stick to Ribeiro, who tipped it past goalie Ed Belfour. Markov's shot broke the blade of Tucker's stick.

Zednik made it 2-0 about six minutes later after his slap shot deflected off Toronto defenseman Tomas Kaberle's stick.

Souray's one-timer on a two-on-one made it 3-0 at 15:39, and Michael Ryder put a rebound past Belfour at 16:40 of the third.

Belfour faced 22 shots.
