SMU Quarterback McCown Leaving
DALLAS (AP) _ Junior quarterback Josh McCown is leaving SMU at the end of the semester, coach Mike Cavan said Wednesday.
McCown started the first six games before being replaced for three games by sophomore Dave Page. McCown then started the final three games for the Mustangs (3-9).
``Josh has been a real team player,″ Cavan said. ``This is Josh’s decision and we wish him the best wherever he ends up. I hope he has a great senior season.″
Cavan didn’t elaborate or give any indication as to where McCown might be headed when he transfers.
McCown completed 169 of 331 passes for 1,969 yards and nine touchdowns this season. He also threw 16 interceptions, the fifth-highest total in SMU history.
McCown leaves ranked fifth in career passing attempts (664) and yardage (4,019) and sixth in completions (340).
Page and sophomore Kelan Luker, who sat out the 2000 season, will battle for the starting job during spring practice.
