Police report: Man killed by police had knife, metal pipe

September 28, 2018

A man who was fatally shot during a confrontation with police last month had a knife, a metal pipe and was screaming obscenities when the incident occurred, according to a police report.

A San Antonio Police officer responded to Pete Sanchez’s apartment at about 11:30 a.m. Aug. 31 in the 5900 block of Royalgate for reports of a man yelling and screaming inside.

When the officer knocked on the apartment door, a man responded with obscene language, “What ... you want, I’m gonna ... kill you!”

Sanchez, 52, then opened the door, a knife in one hand, a metal pipe in another, and charged at the officer, investigators said.

The officer backed up as Sanchez rushed toward him, pointing the objects he held at him, police said.

Police said the officer yelled at Sanchez repeatedly to stop and drop his weapons, but he continued charging.

The officer shot Sanchez several times, the report states.

Investigators said that Sanchez ran back inside his apartment where he stopped, dropping his weapons.

Police applied a tourniquet to Sanchez’s bleeding leg. An officer who arrived seconds later noted that Sanchez was bleeding from several gunshot wounds. He was then taken to University Hospital where he later died.

The report notes that there were three shell casings found at the scene.
