High School roundup Greenwich cross country teams score two wins apiece

Greenwich High School’s girls and boys cross country teams each defeated two of their three FCIAC opponents in Thursday’s meet held at Greenwich Point.

The Cardinals’ girls team beat Brien McMahon, 15-50, and Darien, 19-36. Trumbull posted a 24-31 win over Greenwich, which has an overall record of 8-1.

In the girls’ three-mile race, Mari Noble of Greenwich crossed the finish line first. Noble, a sophomore, registered a winning time of 19:07.32. Alessandra Zaffina of Trumbull placed second in 19:18.82, followed by Mairead Clas from Darien (19:26.17).

Senior Caroline Webb of Greenwich was seventh in 19:52.79, while teammates Zoe Harris (junior, 20:22.07) and Lauren O’Donnell (senior, 20:22.92) were eighth and ninth, respectively.

Hunter Kemp, a senior finished 10th (20:38.29) and senior Catherine Yang was 18th (21:43.48) for the Cardinals.

On the boys’ side, Greenwich topped McMahon, 15-50 and was a 25-31 winner against Darien. Trumbull defeated Greenwich, 23-32.

Junior Alexander Bein had Greenwich’s best finish, placing fourth in 17:01. Senior Akash Molekudy finished seventh for GHS in the three-mile run (17:09), while teammate Aidan Brock was ninth (17:10.50). Stephen Burke placed 10th (17:22) and senior Akshay Molekudy finished 11th (17:31).

Trumbull’s Christopher Lepore was the race’s winner in 16:28. Owen Hopwood of Darien finished second (16:59) and teammate Cormac Brown was third (16:46).

GREENWICH HIGH GIRLS SOCCER

Two goals from sophomore Sophia Bastek lifted the Greenwich High School girls soccer team to its first win of the season on Thursday — a 2-1 triumph against host Stamford.

Bastek’s two goals gave the Cardinals (1-6-1) a 2-0 first-half lead. Junior Claudia Caruso assisted on both goals. Junior goalie Clay Garrett made six saves for Greenwich.

Chanille Assevero had Stamford’s goal. Adrianna DelTorto stopped 12 shots for Stamford (0-6). Greenwich is in action again on Saturday against Norwalk at 12 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
