Brazil: Body of Rio police officer found in trunk
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Police in Rio de Janeiro say the body of a military police officer has been found in the trunk of his car.
Rio’s so-called pacifying police unit, which operates in its “favela” slums, said in a statement that 23-year-old Ryan Guimaraes Procopio worked in the notoriously dangerous Vila Kennedy shantytown.
Procopio’s body was discovered late Monday. The homicide division is investigating.
The statement did not provide any details about the circumstances of the death, but local reports said Procopio’s body was riddled with bullet wounds and showed possible signs of torture.
Begun in 2008, Rio’s pacifying police units aim to restore the rule of law to slums under the control of drug trafficking gangs for decades. The units have been increasingly targeted in recent months.
