Diocese to cooperate with Vermont orphanage investigation
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The Roman Catholic bishop of Burlington says the diocese will cooperate fully with an investigation into decades old abuse at St. Joseph’s Orphanage.
Vermont State Attorney General T.J. Donovan will announce details of the task force on Monday. The investigation follows a recent Buzzfeed News article about child abuse at Roman Catholic orphanages, including St. Joseph’s, which closed in the 1970s. That article included allegations of a boy being thrown from a window to his death, beatings by nuns, a girl forced to slap herself 50 times and children being locked in an attic.
The Burlington Free Press reports that Bishop Christopher Coyne told parishioners and reporters Sunday that the church erred in its legalistic approach to clergy abuse allegations in the past, and that the only way to get to the truth is to be cooperative.
