Target shooters started NV fire that burned 5 square miles

June 6, 2018

DAYTON, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say target shooters started a wildfire that burned more than 5 square miles (13 sq. kilometers) of mostly rangeland in northern Nevada east of Dayton.

Lyon County officials say the fire that started Sunday afternoon was fully contained on Wednesday along Fort Churchill Road about 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) east of U.S. Highway 50.

No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

The Central Lyon County Fire Protection District says some buildings were in the projected path of the fire but the flames didn’t come close enough to any structures to warrant evacuations.

County Manager Jeff Page confirmed the cause of the fire was two people target shooting. He says the local fire district, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Division of Forestry are continuing to investigate.
