Teachers suspended for making boy stand still for slap
ARCHDALE, N.C. (AP) _ Two teachers who made a misbehaving 6-year-old boy stand still so another student could slap him were suspended for the last 12 days of the school year.
The boy had been in trouble several times before and had confronted the other child earlier on Monday, the day the teachers arranged the slap.
``It was almost an act of frustration on the teachers’ part,″ said Worth Hatley, Randolph County Schools superintendent. But ``the bottom line is, board policy doesn’t allow for such actions.″
Hatley said both teachers at Archdale Elementary School had years of experience and were outstanding. He refused to identify them, but sources told the High Point Enterprise they were Frankie Younts and Kathy Walden.
Both teachers also received letters of reprimand, Hatley said.
The boy’s mother, Lois Fender, said she was told the teachers were trying to shock him into behaving himself.
``I guess it’d work,″ she said. ``It sure shocked me.″
She said the school should write her son an apology, as he had to do Monday morning for his misbehavior.
