Nebraskans who were sexually abused by clergy, regardless of when it happened, are urged to report the incidents, and the abusers, the state Attorney General’s Office said Thursday.
Citing recent reports of abuse by priests and others in positions of authority, the office said it is committed to investigating allegations, advocating for victims and pursuing prosecutions of child exploitation crimes involving physical or sexual abuse.
It encouraged those who were abused to call their local law enforcement agency, the Nebraska Child Abuse Hotline at 800-652-1999, or the Nebraska Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 800-422-1494.
People can also leave a tip online at nebraskacrimestoppers.com.
And state law requires those who suspect a child has been sexually abused or is at risk to report the situation to law enforcement.
“It is important that you speak up so perpetrators are brought to justice and other possible victims are protected from future harm,” the office said in the news release.
