Carbdonale Man Faces Felony Charge After Hit And Run While Drunk In Stolen Car

May 17, 2019

SCRANTON — A Carbondale man was intoxicated and driving a stolen SUV when he hit another vehicle in the 1500 block of Mulberry Street and fled in the direction of Geisinger Community Medical Center on March 23, city police said. Police located Matthew John Zito, 25 Reservoir St., “stumbling around” in the 400 block of Arthur Avenue near the hospital shortly after the reported hit and run. Zito’s driver’s license was suspended at the time due to a previous D.U.I., and he was visibly impaired at the scene, according to a criminal complaint. Before being taken for a blood test, Zito yelled at officers to stun him with their stun guns and struggled as they tried to handcuff him. A passenger in the vehicle Zito drove — a silver Honda CRV that had been reported stolen to Jessup police earlier that day — said she told him to drive to the hospital so he could get help for his drinking. She also confirmed that Zito struck the other car on Mulberry Street and did not stop, police said. The blood test revealed that Zito’s blood alcohol concentration was .249%, which is more than three times the legal limit. Zito faces a felony count of receiving stolen property and misdemeanor counts of DUI and resisting arrest. He also faces a misdemeanor count related to the hit and run and a summary charge for driving with a suspended license. He was released on $20,000 unsecured bail and awaits a preliminary hearing scheduled for 11 a.m. May 30. Contact the writer: jhorvath@timesshamrock.com; 570-348-9141; @jhorvathTT on Twitter
