CHESTER, W.Va. (AP) _ Mountaineer Park Raceway, formerly known as Waterford Park, on Wednesday canceled all horse races scheduled for the day, citing track and road conditions.
Snow and wind in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle made conditions hazardous.
WESTERVILLE, Ohio (AP) - Mark Asher, who has served as Otterbein College defensive coordinator the last two years, will be named head football coach at Otterbein on Thursday.
Asher will be announced as the new head coach at a press conference Thursday morning, a spokesman in the school’s sports information office said.
Asher, 32, was a graduate assistant at Ohio State University in 1983 and ’84 and served as an assistant coach at New Mexico under Fred Zechman. It will be Asher’s first head coaching job.
Asher succeeds Bob Shaw, who resigned after a 2-8 record in 1987.
BOHINJ, Yugoslavia (AP) - The Soviet Union’s Tamara Tihonova outraced her teammates Anfisa Reszova and Antonina Ordina Wednesday to win a 10-kilometer women’s World Cup free-style cross country ski race.
Tihonova clocked 30 minutes 7.2 seconds, ahead of Reszova and Ordina, who were timed in 30:43.2 and 30:50.3,respectively.
Eight Soviet women placed among the top 10 in the second race of the World Cup season. The top finisher from a western country was Sweden’s Karin Skog- Lamberg, who was timed in 31:28.8 for 10th place.
Another Soviet, Svetlana Nageikina, placed fourth in 30:55.8, ahead of the current World Cup overall leader, Simone Petter-Geiner of East Germany, who clocked 30:57.3.
Petter-Geiner has 26 points after two races in the World Cup, but the Soviets entered the competition only on Wednesday after missing the opening race.
OTTAWA (AP) - Three NHL players are joining the National Junior team selection camp, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association has announced.
They are center Rob Brown from the Pittsburgh Penguins, defenseman Wayne McBean from the Los Angeles Kings and defenseman Chris Joseph of the Edmonton Oilers, the CAHA and the Canadian Hockey League said Wednesday in a statement.
Joseph will play with the Olympic hockey team at the Isvestia Tournament in Moscow before joining the junior team for the World Junior Championship, which starts Dec. 26 in Moscow.
