Police Investigate Vandalism At Coal Mine Tour
TAYLOR — Police are investigating after someone vandalized the Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour.
Staff at the mine noticed items inside knocked over after they arrived at the site Friday morning to inspect gas levels at the mine, said Bill Davis, deputy director of Lackawanna County Parks and Recreation.
The vandal or vandals broke in by unbolting metal panels that line the sides of the tour, Davis said. Items inside the tour sustained minor damage and nothing was stolen, Davis said. He said breaking into the mine is extremely dangerous because of the gas that accumulates there. Levels have been higher lately due to the weather. Employees kept ventilation fans running overnight due to the high levels, a move that might have saved the vandal’s life, Davis said.
Taylor police are investigating the incident.
