BERLIN (AP) _ U.S. Open champion Serena Williams on Tuesday pulled out of next week’s German Open because she is still nursing a left knee injury.
Williams, ranked sixth in the world, suffered the injury last month during a tournament in Amelia Island, Fla.
Tournament organizers said they are hoping to convince Williams’ older sister, Venus, to enter, along with France’s Mary Pierce.
Venus, ranked third, will play her first tournament of the year at the Betty Barclay Cup in Hamburg, Germany. She has been sidelined by tendinitis in her wrists.
