Prison Guard Beaten By Inmate
SHIRLEY, Mass. (AP) _ An inmate tripped the lock on his cell and beat a female guard who was preparing to start a head count, a newspaper reported.
The state Department of Corrections confirmed the guard had been beaten but declined to provide any details. The prisoner had not been charged because an investigation by the department and state police was not yet complete.
An unidentified prison source told The Boston Herald the guard was beaten early Sunday in a corridor at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute in Shirley., then the inmate dragged her into his cell and beat her some more.
The guard, identified as Christine Miller, suffered severe facial and head injuries, the newspaper said. She was rescued by other guards who came to check on her when she failed to report the count, the newspaper reported.
″I’m sure he (the prisoner) will be dealt with appropriately,″ Robin Bavaro, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman, said Monday.
She said the guard suffered ″serious but not life-threatening″ injuries to her face.
