PD: Trumbull woman’s friend request violated terms of protective order

August 9, 2018

WESTPORT — A Trumbull woman was charged after sending a friend request to a person she wasn’t supposed to have any contact with, police said.

Karen Backus, 55, of Trumbull, was charged with criminal violation of a protective order, non-threatening.

On Monday, a person went to Westport police headquarters to report a violation of a protective order. The victim told police they received a Facebook friend request from Backus.

“An active order of protection was in effect at the time of the request, which prohibited Backus from contacting the victim in any manner,” police said.

Police submitted an arrest warrant application for Backus. After it was approved, Backus turned herself in to police headquarters on Tuesday.

She was released after posting a $20,000 bond. Police said she appeared on court on Wednesday, but there were no updated court records available for her later Wednesday night.
