SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — A Maryland candidate for governor is calling for the suspensions of the University of Maryland’s football coach and athletics director until an investigation is finished into a football player’s death.

Ben Jealous called for the suspensions Saturday, after an announcement Friday night that members of the university’s athletic staff have been placed on administrative leave pending the review of the player’s death.

The Maryland Democrat and former NAACP head says coach DJ Durkin and Athletics Director Damon Evans “are ultimately responsible for ensuring the safety of our student athletes.”

The university announced administrative leave of athletic staff after an ESPN story citing unidentified sources described a program rife with verbal abuse and humiliation of players.
