JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Eric Austin’s 72-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter broke a 7-7 tie as Jackson State University defeated Mississippi Valley State 47-7 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Mississippi Valley (0-3, 0-1 SWAC) took a 7-0 lead on Saturday by marching 67 yards in nine plays, ending on a six-yard TD pass from Keith Poindexter to Marvin Bailey with 4:08 left in the first quarter.
Jackson State (2-2, 1-0 SWAC) committed four turnovers in its first six possessions, before Sean Woodson intercepted Poindexter’s pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown tying the game 7-7 at the half.
After Austin’s tie-breaking interception return, Jackson State scored its second touchdown of the third quarter with 7:08 remaining.
After Matt Bouwens recovered a Delta Devils’ fumble, Grailyn Pratt found Marek Walker in the endzone for a nine yard touchdown pass and a 19-7 lead.
Jackson State failed on its two-point conversion pass, after missing the extra point kick on its previous touchdown.
Jackson State’s offense scored 28 fourth quarter points, while its defense completely shut down Mississippi Valley in the second half.
