PHOENIX (AP) — A Mesa man accused of kidnapping and abusing a 3-year-old girl left in his care has changed his plea to guilty in the case.

Maricopa County Superior Court officials say Francisco Javier Rios-Covarrubias pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of kidnapping and three counts of attempt to commit child abuse and faces a Sept. 27 sentencing.

Rios-Covarrubias was arrested in January 2016 after police received a tip about a duct-taped girl in an apartment.

He originally was accused of felony child abuse, kidnapping and sexual conduct with a minor.

Police say the girl had been offered up for sex and was found malnourished with numerous bruises, scars and blisters on her body.

They say the child's mother dropped her off with Rios-Covarrubias for days at a time while she worked.
