Long Beach St. 7, Utah St. 6
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) _ Todd Studer threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Mark Seay in the first quarter Saturday night and the score stood as Long Beach State beat Utah State 7-6 in a Big West Conference game.
Utah State had a chance to win in the fourth quarter, but Doug Beach missed a 41-yard field goal with 3:23 remaining.
The 49ers (2-6 overall, 2-2 in the Big West) then picked up one first down, which enabled them to run out the clock.
Utah State (1-7, 1-3) scored its only points in the third quarter on a 43- yard interception return by defensive tackle Rob VanDePol. Beach’s conversion attempt was wide to the right, leaving the score 7-6.
Under pressure, Studer threw the ball up for grabs and VanDePol, a 6-foot- 3, 249-pound senior, picked it off and outran a pair of 49ers into the end zone.
Studer’s scoring pass to Seay capped a 62-yard, 11-play drive on Long Beach State’s second possession. The big play was a 30-yard run by Reggie Webb, who led the 49ers in rushing with 74 yards.
Studer hit 13 of 29 attempts for 108 yards with two interceptions. He was playing for the first time since breaking his jaw against Boise State on Sept. 14.
Utah State’s Ron Lopez completed 9 of 27 passes for 166 yards with one interception. Roger Grant led the Aggies in rushing with 124 yards on 29 carries.
Utah State had 261 yards in offense to 243 for Long Beach State. There were a total of 16 punts in the game, which was played in a steady rain at Veterans Stadium.
