Point of Interest: New self-storage facility coming to Stamford’s West Side
11 Leon Place: This oddly shaped 1-acre lot with frontage on Leon Place and Piave Street and some small buildings on the city’s West Side will soon be a self-storage facility after recently garnering approvals from the Zoning Board. The developer, Empire Storage, previously hoped to build housing on the lot, but met significant opposition from neighbors over traffic concerns. The storage building plan came after the land was re-zoned to the new “neighborhood mixed-use design district” early last summer. The district was created to encourage investment in this pocket of the West Side. The facility will make use of mixed facade materials and design and will also see improvements to the streetscape after pressure from the Land Use Bureau, which is in the early stages of instituting so-called “urban design guidelines.” Empire’s attorney Lisa Feinberg said it may be the “the most attractive self-storage facility in the city, if not the state.”
