Kenya’s Kirui Wins Bloomsday Race
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) _ Dominic Kirui of Kenya edged countryman and defending champion Reuben Cheruiyot at the finish line to win the Lilac Bloomsday Run on Sunday.
Kirui covered the 12-kilometer course in 34 minutes, 29 seconds. Cheruiyot, who along with Kirui pulled away from the pack in the final mile, also was clocked at 34:29.
Kenyan runners took nine of the top 10 men’s spots, including the first seven places. The Kenyans have won eight straight Bloomsday men’s races, and nine of 11.
South Africa’s Elana Meyer won the women’s race in 39:23, two seconds ahead of Kenya’s Sally Barsosio.
Three-time defending women’s champion, Jane Omoro of Kenya, placed 10th in 40:39.
