College lifts shelter order after report of gunman on campus

November 20, 2018

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) — Authorities have lifted a shelter-in-place order at Western Connecticut State University that was triggered by a report of a man with a long gun.

There were no reports of gunshots or injuries. The university tweeted Tuesday afternoon that police were continuing to investigate but “the campus has been declared safe.”

School spokesman Paul Steinmetz said a student called police shortly before 2 p.m. to report an armed man in the Danbury school’s Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus, which is a few miles from the main campus.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton says an initial sweep did not turn up anything. He says authorities have begun a second sweep that will include every part of the building, and a drone has been deployed outside.
