ROTORUA, New Zealand (AP) _ A steaming, spitting geyser erupted on the front lawn of a northern New Zealand woman, terrifying the neighborhood and drawing gawkers from far and wide.

``I'm frightened. I don't know what is going to happen,'' Karen Herbert, who rents the home, said Monday. ``I am looking for somewhere else to live.''

The geyser flared to life Friday, hurling rocks _ some the size of TV sets _ and spewing steam, creating a pool of fizzing water 6 feet across and 10 feet deep. Sightseers are clogging the streets of the neighborhood.

Herbert's home in Rotorua, on New Zealand's North Island, is just three blocks from the center of town and not far from the geothermally active Kuirau Park.

``The ground gave way when the man who mows the lawns was working recently,'' she said. ``Now he won't come back.''
