Canadian Infant, ‘Baby Jessica,’ Receives New Heart

February 8, 1987

LOMA LINDA, Calif. (AP) _ A 2 1/2 -month-old Canadian girl who underwent surgery to replace her malformed heart was in critical but stable condition Sunday and doctors were optimistic about her progress, a spokeswoman said.

The girl, identified only as Jessica of Calgary, Alberta, received the transplanted heart Saturday at Loma Linda University Medical Center, said spokeswoman Anita Rockwell.

Jessica is the eighth child 3 or younger to get a heart transplant at the hospital since November 1985.

Four of them survived, including Jesse Dean Sepulveda, who received his transplanted heart in June after officials initially rejected his case, contending his young, unwed parents couldn’t care for the child properly.

Jessica’s condition was normal for heart transplant patients, said Ms. Rockwell, who was unable to provide further details on the baby’s condition or the operation.
