Sosa Hits 39th and 40th Homers
PHOENIX (AP) _ Sammy Sosa hit his 39th and 40th home runs of the season, connecting for the first grand slam of his career Monday night in the Chicago Cubs’ game against Arizona.
Sosa hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning off Willie Blair. Sosa hit a slam in the eighth off Alan Embree to put the Cubs ahead 6-2.
Sosa matched his career high of 40 homers in a season set in 1996. He has 102 RBIs, and reached the 100-RBI mark for the fourth straight year.
The All-Star outfielder had hit 246 homers in his career without a slam before tagging Embree. No player in major league history had gone longer without hitting a slam _ going into this year, Bob Horner held the record of 209 home runs before a slam.
Mark McGwire of St. Louis leads the majors with 44 homers. His Cardinals were idle Monday.
