Treasury Department Nomination Approved by Senate Finance Committee
WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Senate Finance Committee today approved the nomination of M. Peter McPherson, who heads the nation’s foreign aid agency, to hold the No. 2 job in the Treasury Department.
The nomination now goes to the Senate for final action. McPherson, 46, a lawyer and former tax-law specialist at the Internal Revenue Service, would succeed Richard G. Darman, who resigned.
The committee recommended McPherson by voice vote and without discussion.
There was no mention of a General Accounting Office report that concluded that as administrator of the Agency for International Development, McPherson violated regulations prohibiting conflicts of interest and regulating use of government vehicles.
That report was made to Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., who opposes McPherson’s nomination because of his conduct as AID administrator.
