Venezuela: arrest in slaying of German businessman
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s chief prosecutor’s office says it has arrested a man in the death of a German businessman who apparently was shot while resisting a robbery in his hotel room.
Prosecutors say 37-year-old Nelson Gerardo Reyes was arrested Friday, more than five months after the June 18 killing of Christophorus Wilhelm Kleuters. One of Kleuters’ bodyguards also was wounded and one of the attackers was killed.
Reyes faces charges of premeditated homicide and criminal association.
Violence is soaring in Venezuela, and the country’s murder rate is among the highest in the world. The government has struggled to reassure tourists and international institutions that the country remains a safe place to visit.
