Rutgers 80, St. Bonaventure 76

OLEAN, N.Y. (AP) _ Albert Karner scored 20 of his team-high 25 points in the second half to help Rutgers overcome an 18-point deficit in an 80-76 win over St. Bonaventure Saturday night.

Rutgers (11-13, 6-8 Atlantic 10) still trailed 71-60 with 6:11 to go but went on a 17-3 run to take the lead for good on a Karner 3-pointer with 2:05 to play.

Rutgers led 79-76 with 54 seconds left when Damon Santiago missed a free throw and St. Bonaventure got the rebound. But the Bonnies misfired on three 3-point attempts and Rutgers’ Eric Clark added an insurance free throw with 15.7 seconds to play to close out the scoring.

St. Bonaventure (17-11, 9-7) had led 48-32 at the half and opened a 57-39 lead on a Nii Nelson-Richards 3-pointer with 15:47 to play.

The Scarlet Knights responded with a 17-2 run and closed to within 59-56 on a Karner layup with 9:47 to play. But the Bonnies answered with a 9-4 run to go up by 11 on a Jeff Quackenbush 3-pointer.

After hitting 18-for-35 from the field in the first half, the Bonnies shot just 23 percent in the second half, going 7-for-31.

Nelson-Richards scored a career-high 29 points to lead St. Bonaventure.
