American Shot to Death in Mexico
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) _ A New Jersey woman was found shot to death inside the Lake Chapala trailer home where she was vacationing, the Jalisco state governor’s office said Monday.
Toniann J. Darling, 48, died just after midnight in the village of Tepizque of two gunshot wounds to the back. Her husband, Alvaro Gonzalez de la Garza, 41, of San Antonio, Texas, is being held for questioning.
Gonzalez told police he was sleeping when he was awakened by the sound of an explosion and three shots. He found Darling wounded in a chair, and a sofa was ablaze, the Jalisco government said in a news release.
He then beckoned neighbors to help him carry Darling outside the trailer park, by which time she had apparently died, Gonzalez told police.
The news release did not provide additional information.
The American consulate in Guadalajara was closed for the day and U.S. officials could not be reached immediately for comment. Police said they were investigating.
Tens of thousands of Americans and Canadians live in the Lake Chapala area, about 480 miles northwest of the capital Mexico City.
